SWISN: Where you expecting to be a head coach at such a young age?
Coach Bettag: Am I that young? Haha! I have always wanted to be a head coach, and I have been an assistant under one of the best mentors I could have ever asked for in Chris Barrett for nine seasons. I wouldn’t say I expected it, but I am ready. I am not positive, but I think I am the youngest head coach in 6A football in the state. That is exciting! SWISN: Tell me a little about what attracted you to Southport the opportunity to be a 6A head football coach. Coach Bettag: Southport has a tradition of excellence in academics and athletics. We can build a championship program here. Southport and Terre Haute North are both in Conference Indiana, so there is familiarity there. The Southport community provides more opportunities for my family to continue to grow. 3. What is your football philosophy Building high character, high integrity, hard working young men first will lead to success on and off the field. SWISN: Who are some of your influences as a coach? Coach Bettag: In no particular order: My parents, Bob Clayton (Heritage Hills), Trent Miles (Indiana State), Chris Barrett (Terre Haute North), Todd Woelfle (Terre Haute North), Greg Barrett (South Vermillion). SWISN: Was it hard to leave Terre Haute North? Coach Bettag: Yes. When you spend nearly a decade somewhere, you build deep relationships. Family, friends, colleagues, and players. Those relationships and being so close to family will be deeply missed, but we know this is the right decision to make. SWISN: What are your program goals as a head coach? Coach Bettag: Support and Promote the Cardinal Way – Character, Commitment, Consistency Develop fundamentally and technically sound athletes Win the opener, win the conference, win the closer. |
