The Loogootee Lady Lions
Rinse and Repeat. Rinse and Repeat. All through the tournament path the Lady Lions of Loogootee just keep repeating themselves from last year when they won the 1A State Basketball Championship. After knocking off Orleans, Trinity Lutheran, and Tecumseh just as they did last year, Saturday, they defeated Greenwood Christian in the 1A Semi-State at Jasper just as they did last year. Only this time, it was a tougher matchup than the 57-40 win last season despite holding one of Class A’s top team in scoring at a 65 point clip only 33 points, and holding THE most prolific scorer in Johnson County history, Izzy Reed, to just 6 points . The Lions struggled on offense, but as usual their Defense showed up big time in defeating the Lady Cougars 43-33 to advance with the opportunity to repeat as State Champions next weekend against, you guessed it, the same team the Lions won a nail biter from last year at Banker’s Life, the Pioneer Lady Panthers, who just like all the other opponents in the tournament will be seeking their revenge.
The Lady Lions lead throughout the first 3 quarters building as much as a 9 point lead late in the 3rd quarter before Greenwood Christian came roaring back to tie the game at 29 a piece. But as usual, ball control and free throws down the stretch by Super Senior Kalea Fleming eventually wore the Lady Cougars down. Fleming, who torched the Lady Cougars for 24 points in last year’s Semi-State championship, lead the Lady Lions again with 16 points, while Brooklyn Jones added 13. Junior Kylie VanHoy contributed 6 points, all in the second half, while big Sister Mackenzie had 5. Jaelyn Walker came off the bench to come up big defensively while knocking down a 3 early in the game. The Lady Lions are now 20-4 on the season and will play Pioneer for a State Championship for the 3rd time in the last year as they beat Pioneer last February to capture the 1A basketball state championship, but lost to Pioneer in the 1A Volleyball State Championship game in Muncie in November. So, there IS One difference from all of the other opponents of the Lady Lions in the tournament who failed to get their revenge. Both Schools, Loogootee and Pioneer will be seeking revenge of each other next weekend at Banker’s Life in Indianapolis. In a sense, it’ the rubber match in what quickly has become a heated rivalry. |
Thus far, the path to the 2021 Semi-State for the Defending 1A State Champion Loogootee Lady Lions has been remarkably similar to the 2020 path to the 1st State Championship in Lady Lion History.
A convincing win over Orleans in the Sectional Championship, going through Trinity Lutheran in the Regional Semi-final and Tecumseh in the Regional Championship, all as they did in 2020. And on Saturday, if history repeats itself again, the Lady Lions will be making a return trip to Indy to defend their title. This year’s Semi-state opponent at the Jasper Semi-State is Greenwood Christian. The same time (1pm) venue (Jasper) and opponent the Lady Lions disposed of convincingly 57-40 a year ago. The Lady Lions come in at 19-4 but struggled through the regular season with quarantines, injuries and illness. It’s no coincidence this year’s team finally hit their stride when everyone finally became healthy, and at the right time. Tournament time. The Lady Lions under head coach Brian Smith have compiled the 4th best record in the entire State of Indiana regardless of class in girls basketball over the past 4 years, winning an amazing 87% of their games (86-13). The Lady Lions are led by 1000 plus scorer Brooklyn Jones along with fellow Seniors Kalea Fleming, Mackenzie Van Hoy and Isabelle Waggner and Junior Center Kylie Van Hoy. The Lady Lions Jaelyn Walker and Adie Nolley contribute important minutes off the bench. All played a role in last year’s State Championship team. Saturday’s opponent, Greenwood Christian boasts the All-time Scoring leader in Johnson County, and at 5’8, amazingly enough, the ALL-TIME Leading Rebounder in Indiana Girls Basketball History, Izzy Reed. Reed averages 25 points per game and will be key in which way this one goes. If she gets her points and controls the boards as she has done throughout her career, the Lady Lions season may end in Jasper. However, if they stay on script and history repeats itself again and the Lady Lions are able to contain Reed as they did in last year’s Semi-State, the Lady Lions will most likely be looking to repeat as State Champions next weekend at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. |
