The Shoals Jugrox and their Coach Bryson Abel enter Tuesday nights sectional matchup against the Orleans Bulldogs with an 11-10 record. For the Shoals seniors this is their 4th consecutive 10 plus win season. It has been a big turnaround for the program that Abel took over in 2015 after a 3 win season. Abel has been to 3 sectional finals in his first five seasons, but he has yet to break through with a sectional championship.
The Rox and Bulldogs played an overtime thriller at Shoals less than 2 weeks ago. Orleans pulled out a 56-48 win that night, but the Rox had a 4 point lead with a minute to go in regulation. Last year Orleans also won the regular season matchup before falling to the Rox in the 2020 sectional semifinal.
Shoals is led by 6-5 Senior Center Reece Sherrill who heads into sectional play as the teams leading scorer and rebounder. He is averaging 15.7 points and over 7 rebounds per game. Sherrill finds himself needing eight points to reach 1000 for his career. Senior guard Levi Pendley is the teams second leading scorer and has been a knock down 3 point shooter at 46% on the season. Junior Brayden Perry handles the majority of the ball handling duties and leads the team in assists. Junior Carter Roush provides a strong post presence and sophomore Rylan Perry rounds out the starting 5. The top subs for the Rox are Senior Adam Sukup who comes in as an instant offense spark plug and Senior Sean Lents who is a high energy player who provides strong defense. The team did suffer the loss of another top sub when Senior Dallas Brett went down with a knee injury in January.
As always the Rox path to a sectional title will be a tough one. With 4 top ten ranked teams sectional 63 is the toughest 1a sectional and very possibly the hardest sectional in the state. Of the six teams in the sectional five have winning records. Barr Reeve enters sectional play ranked as the number one team in 1a followed by number two ranked Loogootee number five North Daviess and tenth ranked Orleans.
